The invention of the electromagnet greatly impacted two fronts during the Industrial Revolution: machinery and communication. Electromagnets could easily be stronger than previously used permanent magnets, capable of doing more work. On the other hand, electromagnets led to an incredibly delicate but efficient method of communication (the telegraph) that had greater range, speed, and reliability than previous long distance communication methods. The following two pages explain the development of the electromagnet and the telegraph and their significance to the Industrial Revolution.
